The house of hydrogen

Developers are bringing hydrogen and solar power together in a first-of-its-kind neighborhood. And they’re putting it in South Carolina.

Ron Monahan, a Boulder, Colo., developer, unveiled The Ridge at Chukker Creek in Aiken on Thursday.

Home buyers in the neighborhood can opt for a “Net Zero” house, which means they essentially will not have an energy bill.

Homes start at $300,000, Monahan said.

While they will be getting power from the electricity grid on occasion, they will be generating power through hydrogen fuel cells and solar panels to feed back into it at other times.

This is the first housing development in the world to offer the technology to home buyers.

Construction is slated to begin on the neighborhood’s first spec house in May, and it should be operational by midsummer.
