Man accused of slapping Columbia police officer

A man was arrested Friday after authorities say he slapped a Columbia police officer in the face after she intervened in a dispute between him and a woman.

Michael Alvin Hall, 25, is charged with resisting arrest, failing to stop on police command, public disorderly conduct, possession of crack with intent to distribute and possession of crack with intent to distribute in proximity to a school.

Hall was a passenger in a car stopped at the intersection of Garners Ferry Road and Pelham Drive and was arguing with the driver, police spokesman Brick Lewis said.

The officer ordered him out of the car and attempted to detain him, when he slapped her and ran, Lewis said.

The officer apprehended Hall after a short chase, with help from a passing motorist, Lewis said.

Officers searched Hall and found a cigar tube with crack inside, Lewis said.

Hall is at Richland County jail.
