S.C. man to lead military association

HILTON HEAD - A South Carolina retiree has been elected president of the 82nd Airborne Division Association, a group that maintains ties between active-duty and former members of military paratrooper units.

The Island Packet reports that Bill Eberle started a Hilton Head Island chapter of the group in 2005. The national association has 33,000 members in 100 chapters around the country.

Eberle says he wants to boost the group's scholarship fund, help members support those who have been wounded in combat and maintain the history of the Fort Bragg-based 82nd Airborne Division, which dates to World War I.
