October has been very wet in Columbia, but 2009 won't come close to setting an October rainfall record.
Going into the last day of the month, 6.55 inches of rain had fallen at Columbia Metropolitan Airport. That's more than twice the normal rainfall for October (2.8 inches) but well below the record of 12.09 inches in 1959.
October 2009 ranks as the sixth wettest October in Columbia since the weather records moved to the current airport site in 1948.
Such heavy rainfall is especially unusual without any tropical storms affecting the state in October.
