Lexington state convict at large after escape

A convict from Lexington County is at large after escaping from a minimum security prison in Rock Hill, state prison officials said.

William Newcomb, 43, was confirmed missing late Saturday afternoon from the Catawba Pre-Release Center.

In 2008 in Lexington County, Newcomb was sentenced to three years in prison for financial identity fraud. He is described as 5-11, about 160 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes, officials said.

The 175-inmate pre-release center is for inmates within 36 months of being released.

Inmates at this facility often work on highway litter clean-up crews, as well as work for state agencies such as the S.C. Department of Transportation and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, according to the state Department of Corrections Internet site.
