City Council votes no on elephant statue

Columbia City Council members voted 6-1 Wednesday night to deny an animal rights group's request to put an elephant statue on the sidewalk in front of the State House.

City Councilman Kirkman Finlay voted no.

Council members said the request by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for a parade permit was not the right kind of permit. They suggested PETA apply for an encroachment or place their statue in one of the city's parks.

PETA wants to protest the circus, which will be in town the first week of February.
