Action delayed on smoking at business

Columbia City Council members have delayed a vote that would authorize the city to take a local business to court for violating the city's smoking ban.

The Tobacco Merchant on Bower Parkway has a business license as a retail tobacco store, which is listed as an exception under the city's smoking ban.

But the store's owners have installed a bar and are now selling beer and wine. City officials say that makes the store a bar, which is not exempt from the smoking ban.

Council members want to talk to the city's attorney in a closed-to-the-public meeting before making a decision.
