The Beaufort County School District has settled a lawsuit for $120,000 that was filed on behalf of a special-needs student who said she was sexually assaulted while attending Battery Creek High School.
The girl, then 18, was sexually assaulted three times on school property between November 2005 and May 2006, according to the lawsuit.
The suit was filed in 2007 against local and state education officials. It claims they did not protect her or properly supervise her and the other students involved.
The settlement, approved Sept. 1, sets aside about $36,500 in a trust for the student. The remainder will pay court costs and legal fees incurred over three years.

The student is not identified in the lawsuit because of the sensitive nature of the subject, according to court documents. She and her appointed guardian, a cousin, use pseudonyms.
