Columbia City Council members decided they would not sue the city’s Board of Zoning Appeals to stop construction of a 130-foot cell phone tower at Trenholm Road and Beltline Boulevard.
Council members were considering taking legal action to stop construction after some nearby neighborhood residents complained they were not notified of the construction. Council made the decision after discussing the issue with the city’s attorney in a closed meeting. The zoning board posted signs for 15 days on the property and published a notice in the newspaper before approving the construction. And company representatives met with several neighborhood residents in the surrounding area.
"It didn’t seem that there was a basis for us to proceed," Plaugh said. "I’ve communicated to the residents that certanily this in no way biases or prevents them from pursinig that."
