SPARTANBURG - Authorities have charged a man arrested in Tennessee with murder in the death of a former sheriff.
Spartanburg County deputies say 82-year-old former Sheriff Charles Snipes was found dead at his used car lot in Spartanburg early Tuesday. Snipes was sheriff of Spartanburg County from 1961 to 1968.
Coroner Rusty Clevenger says an autopsy showed Snipes died from a blow to the head.
Authorities say 33-year-old Jeffrey Eugene Bailey of Spartanburg was arrested during a traffic stop in Erwin, Tenn., on Tuesday driving Snipes’ pickup truck.
