CHARLESTON - A new study finds that military operations in the Charleston area pump almost $5 billion a year into the local economy.
The study was released Thursday by the Center for Business Research of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce.
The study found there are 22,000 active duty, reserve and civilian personnel working for the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security in the Charleston area.
The combined payroll is $840 million.

For the federal fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, almost $19 million in new construction and about $71 million in renovations were completed at area facilities.
Joint Base Charleston, which united the Charleston Air Force Base with the Naval Weapons Station, is now the region’s largest single employer with 20,172 employees.
