Charleston mayor to seek 10th term

CHARLESTON - Charleston Mayor Joe Riley says he will seek a 10th term in office next year.

Riley has served as mayor longer than anyone in Charleston’s 340-year history.

Riley made the announcement Tuesday morning in an e-mail to supporters, accompanied by a video message. The mayor says his campaign will officially begin next spring.

Riley is a Democrat, although the city has nonpartisan elections.

He told supporters there are important challenges ahead for Charleston, which has seen a citywide revitalization since he first became mayor in the 1970s.

Riley easily won re-election in 2007, even though some people were calling for change as the election came just months after the fire at the Sofa Super Store that killed nine Charleston firefighters.
