Newberry businessman Chad Connelly was elected South Carolina Republican Party chairman Saturday, winning a majority of votes in the three-way race on a second ballot.
Connelly takes over just as the 2012 GOP presidential primary is heating up, and his chief task will be raising money to host the election. The exact primary day has yet to be set, but will likely be held late January or February.
Connelly defeated Greenville attorney Stephen Brown and Orangeburg attorney and former lieutenant governor candidate Bill Connor.
Connelly follows outgoing chair Karen Floyd.
