Five Points, the popular entertainment district near the USC campus, erupted in celebration as the game ended. People poured onto Harden, Green and Devine streets, yelling and cheering as cars honked horns. The sidewalk near Group Therapy, a landmark Five Points bar, was packed with revelers shortly before midnight.
Police were on hand throughout the area, but much of the celebration appeared to be good natured. The scene looked more like a Saturday night in October than a Tuesday in June, a time when most of the campus is quiet except for summer school. Just like last year, when Carolina won its first national title, cheers of "Go Cocks'' could be heard on virtually every street corner.
"This is awesome,'' said Columbia resident Nick Maass, 22, as he waited to cross Harden Street. "I didn't think Carolina had the juice to do it, but they did.''
