Midlands area law enforcement will conduct public safety checkpoints including DUI enforcement during the Memorial Day weekend.
The Lexington County sheriff’s office announced it will place safety check points on numerous busy roadways including Beulah Church Road, Calks Ferry Road, Colony Lakes, Eastlawn Drive, Hunters Blind Drive, Scoggins Drive, West Hampton Road, YMCA Road at in I-20 and I-26 construction zones.
In Columbia, officers will increase patrols in North Columbia and on major interstates to deter reckless and impaired driving, speeding and other violations that can cause collisions.
Every vehicle that enters a checkpoint will be stopped.
Officers will check drivers for: a valid driver’s license, possible impairment, seatbelt use, proper child restraints and nny other violations of law that may be observed.
The department offered these safety tips: find a designated driver if you are planning to consume alcohol, wear your seatbelt, obey the rules of the road, do not speed, stay alert, do not text and drive.
Drivers are encouraged to call 911, or *HP if they suspect that a driver is impaired or reckless.
