Charleston might have its tourists and fancy travel rankings and all that. That’s just fine.

But Columbia has found its way onto a list for the real cool kids: An up-and-coming hotspot you should notice before everyone else does.

The website Thrillist named Columbia one of eight “under-the-radar” American cities to visit “before they’re too popular” – impressively dubbed “the new Nashvilles and Portlands.”

“There may be no better city from which to view the total solar eclipse this August 21 than Columbia. But that’s not the only thing SC’s capital has going for it,” Thrillist says of Columbia.

The article notes Columbia’s Vista entertainment district and Tim Tebow playing for the Fireflies at the lauded Spirit Communications Park as pluses.

“Add in a fashion week, a rosé festival, the multitudes of USC bars at college-friendly prices, and all that old Southern architecture and charm that people go ga-ga for in Charleston, and you’ve got a city on the rise,” it says.

Soda City is in good company on the list. Other cities include Houston, Chattanooga, Boise and our neighbor Charlotte.
