Officials say a 6-year-old girl died in a house fire on Old Dunbar Road in West Columbia late Tuesday.

A 6-year-old girl died in a West Columbia house fire late Tuesday, authorities said.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher identified the victim early Wednesday as Aiyanna Shaw, a resident of the Old Dunbar Road home where the fire broke out.

An autopsy Wednesday determined Aiyanna died of thermal injuries, Fisher said.

Firefighters and EMS responded to the blaze around 10 p.m. Tuesday and saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the homes on the 2000 block of Old Dunbar Road, Lexington County spokesman Harrison Cahill said. Two people had made it out of the home safely, but another person was still inside, Cahill said at the time.

Firefighters found Aiyanna but were unable to resuscitate her, Cahill said.

The scene had been cleared by 12:40 a.m. Wednesday; however, the State Law Enforcement Division and coroner’s office are still investigating to determine the cause of the fire.

Cahill said it is standard protocol for SLED to investigate any fatal fire in the county.
