Mike Green elected to fill vacancy on West Columbia City Council on Tuesday, June 20, 2017.

Voters in the southwest corner of West Columbia on Tuesday chose Mike Green as their new City Council member.

The Republican activist will serve five months as District 1 council member after winning a nonpartisan contest 137-97 over challenger Sandra Harley.

Green replaces Harley’s late husband, Dale, who died last spring after nearly 24 years in office. He becomes one of eight council members in the Lexington County community of 16,000 residents.

Another contest is ahead soon for the winner since the post is again on the Nov. 7 ballot, this time for a four-year term in office.
