A train derailed in Lugoff on Saturday morning.
Lugoff Fire Department Dennis Ray said around 1 a.m., crews were dispatched to handle the derailment of 12 of 18 CSX cars and one of two locomotives near U.S. 601. The derailment caused “major damage” to the tracks.
Though no one was injured, one of the cars damaged a neighboring storage warehouse, Ray said. Diesel leaked from one of the locomotives but was contained by crews. The train’s derailment did not lead to roads being shut down, he said.
CSX Police also were dispatched to the scene to investigate the cause of the derailment with the train engineer and conductor. An Amtrak passenger train had to be stopped at the Camden depot until the rail line could be cleared, Ray said.
No additional information was immediately available.
