Fire destroys businesses in Elgin, no one injured

A large fire destroyed a commercial building housing at least two businesses in Elgin Sunday, officials say.

The fire broke out around 10:45 a.m at a building in the 2400 block of Railroad Avenue, one block from Main Street in downtown Elgin, Kershaw County Fire Marshal Keith Ray said.

The building, which housed an auto repair shop and a roofing business, was completely destroyed and a number of vehicles inside the building were also destroyed. Two people were working in the repair shop when the fire broke out, but no one was injured in the incident, Ray said.

Fire crews from a number of fire departments in the area assisted the Blaney Fire Department with the blaze and were on scene helping to remove debris from the buildings for about three and half hours, Ray said.

The cause of the blaze appears to be accidental in nature, he said.

Fire officials are continuing to investigate.
