No injuries in fully involved boat fire on Lake Murray

The Department of Natural Resources responded to a boat fire on Lake Murray near Lands End Monday.

DNR Capt. Robert McCullough said all of the passengers had exited the boat before it was in a fully involved fire and there were no injuries.

“Everybody got off the boat,” McCullough said of the incident, which occurred at approximately 3 p.m. “They said they smelled smoke and suspected there was engine trouble.”

McCullough said DNR responded to a call on Coast Guard radio, along with emergency teams from Lexington and Richland counties. According to McCullough, when the agencies arrived the fire had been extinguished as the boat burnt to the water line, where it remained partially submerged.

Only the boat was damaged in the incident, and it’s up to the owner to have it removed from Lake Murray, McCullough said. He added that the fire is under investigation, but said that the probable cause “appears to be engine trouble.” McCullough said that the names of the boat owner and passengers weren’t immediately available.
