Columbia police arrested a woman accused of rummaging through mailboxes at an apartment building near the University of South Carolina and stealing mail.
Investigators believe Rita Payne Smith, 56, stole mail from multiple mailboxes at the Wilshire House Apartments, 1100 Wheat St., earlier this month.
Surveillance cameras caught her allegedly using a master key to open the mailboxes at the apartment in clusters. Police said she does have legal access to one mailbox in the mail area.
Smith is accused of stealing several pieces of mail, including bills and invitations. She allegedly kept some of the mail and threw away the rest in a nearby trash can.
Investigators continue to work on determining the motive.
Smith is charged with petit larceny, possession of master keys (non-owner of key sets) and malicious injury to property.
Smith was arrested Tuesday and transported to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
United State Postal Service Inspectors are assisting the Columbia Police Department with this case.
