A Columbia woman is charged in Lexington County with murder in the death of her mother.
Daphaney Denise Smith, 37, strangled her mother at a home the women shared with Smith’s grandmother, according to an arrest warrant from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
The residence is on Emory Lane, which is near Irmo High School near the intersection of St. Andrews Road and Harbison Boulevard.
After being discovered by deputies on Sunday, Denise Hollingsworth, 54, was identified as the victim by Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher, who said Hollingsworth died of asphyxiation by strangulation.

“Investigators believe Ms. Smith killed her mother sometime between Nov. 1 and Nov. 6 after an argument,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said in a statement.
Smith also has been charged with abusing a vulnerable adult after deputies found her 82-year-old grandmother had been left unattended in the Emory Lane home with Hollingsworth’s body, according to Koon.
Smith left her grandmother with dementia in an empty bathtub with crackers and a pie and fled the home, according to public information officer Capt. Adam Myrick, adding the grandmother is being treated at a hospital.
Smith is being held in the Lexington County Detention Center after a judge denied her bond Monday.
