Columbia police are investigating after a body was discovered Thursday in the trunk of a car in a neighborhood a block south of Columbia College.
The unidentified body was found after officers received an request from the Columbia Housing Authority to search for someone in an area off North Main Street, Police Chief Skip Holbrook said. He declined to explain why.
Around 10:45 a.m., an officer found a burgundy vehicle on the 1200 block of East Muller Avenue and noticed an odor coming from it, Holbrook said. A body was found in the trunk of that vehicle.
Holbrook said investigators are treating this as a suspicious death.
He would not say what the gender of the deceased person was or discuss why police were seeking the person.
Efforts to reach college officials Thursday were unsuccessful.
