Death of third infant ruled homicide

The death of a 2-month-old boy at a home April 2 was ruled a homicide Tuesday, said Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.

Watts said Michael Harris Watts died of asphyxiation.

No one has been charged in the death.

Michael is the third infant to die since 1998 in the care of Andrea M. Person, 39, of Scottish Court in Northeast Richland.

Person has been charged with two counts of homicide by child abuse in the deaths of infants in 1998 and 2001.

On Monday, Circuit Court Judge Diane Goodstein denied bond for Person, saying she was concerned that the wife and mother of two had ignored state Department of Social Services’ orders to shut down the in-home care business.
