Fallen officer to be honored at ceremony

Law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty will be honored at a memorial service Wednesday in Columbia.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers' Association organizes the Police Memorial Ceremony annually for officers killed in the line of duty in the previous year.

One officer was killed in 2006. Aiken County Sheriff's Sgt. Jason Sheppard, 29, was killed Dec. 7 while directing traffic on U.S. 1 in Aiken, Richland County Sheriff's Capt. Joseph Pellicci said. The collision was accidental.

The ceremony is at 11 a.m. at the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy, 5400 Broad River Road.
