Witnesses turn in rock-throwing car burglar

Lexington Sheriff's deputies arrested a man Tuesday who witnesses say tried to steal from cars by throwing rocks through the windshields.

A deputy arrested the 34-year-old suspect, identified by police as Brian William Lee, 34, of West Columbia, as he was apparently trying to break into a car parked at a store on Augusta Road, the Sheriff's Department said.

Witnesses at Woodberry Plaza called police and said a man was trying to break vehicle windows with rocks. The man then walked across the street to Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse where a responding deputy saw him trying to break into a vehicle.

As the deputy watched, the man opened the door of a car just after the driver parked it and left it unlocked. The deputy said he watched the man search through the passenger compartment, then confronted him as he tried to remove a navigation system. The deputy found large rocks in the man's right front coat pocket.

Investigators are looking into other crimes possibly committed by Lee. Anyone with information can call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
