Bank manager pleads guilty to embezzlement

A Greenwood bank manager has pleaded in federal court to embezzlement, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Thursday.

Donna B. Beardsley, 46, of Greenwood, will be sentenced at a later date.

Authorities say Beardsley stole more than $600,000 from customer accounts and spent the money for herself. The thefts took place between April 2007 and July 2008.

When confronted by bank officials and agents of the U.S. Secret Service, Beardsley admitted to taking the money which she used to pay off credit cards, make home improvements, and purchase land. The land has since been sold and the proceeds paid to the bank, according to reports.

Beardsley faces a maximum penalty of $1 million find and 30 years' imprisonment. She must also pay full restitution to the bank.

The case was investigated by agents of the U.S. Secret Service.
