Girl, 11, shot in lip on school bus

HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- A 10-year-old boy shot an 11-year-old girl in the lip with a BB gun as the two rode the bus to school Thursday morning on Hilton Head Island, according to a release from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

The boy, a student at the Hilton Head Island School for the Creative Arts, was charged with disturbing schools after administrators there found the gun in his backpack Thursday, according to the release.

Sheriff P.J. Tanner said Thursday night the BB gun was an air pistol, a handgun-sized weapon.

Once she got to school, the girl, a student at Hilton Head Island International Baccalaureate Elementary, told teachers she had been shot in the lip during her bus ride. She told them a boy from the School for the Creative Arts had brought the BB gun onto the bus several times over the past few weeks and that it often was passed around to other students during the bus ride, according to the release.

IB administrators called their counterparts at the boy's school, who then took the student out of class, searched his backpack and found the gun and a container of BBs, according to the release.

The student's case will be processed in family court.

He has been suspended from school.

Gretchen Keefner, principal of the School for the Creative Arts, declined to comment on the incident.

Tanner declined to say Thursday night whether the bus driver had been questioned.

The incident is under investigation and further charges might be pending, according to the release.
