Sumter agencies join Guns and Roses initiative

The Sumter Police Department and Sumter County Sheriff's Office said today they will partner with Richland County agencies on Valentine's Day to take guns off the streets.

The "Guns for Roses" partnership with the Richland County Sheriffs and City of Columbia Police departments will take place from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Feb. 14.

In the Sumter area, the gun buyback program will allow residents to turn in a firearm for a rose and a gift card issued through the Sumter Chamber of Commerce CertifiChecks to use at more than 200 locations in Sumter for goods and services. Gift cards will be given in increments of $50 for a rifle or shotgun and $100 for a handgun.

The Sumter agencies will be aided by the Rev. Marion H. Newton, senior pastor of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church; the Rev. H. Albert Sims Jr., senior pastor of Bethesda Church of God; and Barney Gadson, director of M. H. Family Life Enrichment Center.

This event will take place in Sumter at Bethesda Church of God, 2730 Broad St.(the former Lowe's) and M. H. Newton Family Life Enrichment Center, 415 Manning Ave.; in Columbia, Friendship Baptist Church, 1237 House St.
