Suspect wanted in walking-stick attack turns himself in

A man police believe broke another man's cheek bone with a walking stick during a Jan. 27 argument has turned himself in.

Charles David Whetstone, 27, wanted for assault and battery with intent to kill, turned himself in today to Richland County authorities.

Police reports indicate an argument started when the younger sister of the victim ran through the yard of another man, who began to call her obscene names.

The victim was defending his sister when the man struck him in the head several times with a 3 1/2-inch wide walking stick, reports allege.

The victim suffered a broken cheek bone and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
