Traffic stop, tip lead to drug arrest

A traffic stop, along with a tip about believed drug activity at a Hardscrabble Road apartment, led to $235,000 in drugs being discovered, the Richland County Sheriff's Department said today.

Reports indicate deputies conducted a traffic stop after spotting a car speeding on Interstate 77 at Farrow Road.

The driver, Karlos D. Sears, 28, was arrested on the scene after deputies said they found marijuana.

Deputies then linked the arrest to reports of drug activity at an apartment at The Reserves at Lake Carolina. During the search officers reported finding packages of crack cocaine and powder cocaine, packaging materials, a 9-mm handgun and an ecstasy pill.

Estimated total value of the drugs was $235,000, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said.

Sears is charged with speeding, improper lane change, failure to surrender driver's license on request, possession of ecstasy, trafficking powder cocaine, trafficking crack cocaine, and malicious injury to property.

He is being held at the Alvin S. Glen Detention Center in Columbia.
