Cops seize 83 pot plants in Columbia home

A Columbia man was arrested and 83 marijuana plants were seized in a home raid Saturday after neighbors tipped off authorities, the Richland County Sheriff's department said.

Andrew R. Angel, 29, of 513 Trader Mill Rd. in Spring Valley West, was charged with manufacturing marijuana and possession with intent to distribute marijuana, the sheriff's office said.

Sheriff Leon Lott said narcotics agents searched the home at about 11 a.m. and found marijuana, plastic storage containers with marijuana inside, and hashish in various areas of the home.

Lott said the operation included lighting systems, potting soil for growing the plants, and packaging materials for the sales of the drug. Some of the marijuana was found in the freezer, inside of a butter container in the refrigerator and baked into a brownie loaf, Lott said

In addition to the drugs and equipment, a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe was also seized, Lott said.

The sheriff's department said Angel was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and was later released.
