4 charged in Newberry robbery

Three Newberry County men and a juvenile have been charged in the assault and robbery of another Newberry man last month, according to the Newberry County Sheriff's Department.

On April 26, Jose Vasquez reported to police that he had been assaulted in his back yard at 203 Wood Lane, the sheriff's department said. According to a news release from the department, Vasquez reported that four men jumped on him and began hitting him in the mouth and nose with an open beer bottle. Vasquez told officers that once he fell to the ground, the men took his money, ATM card, and several personal identification items.

Vasquez was treated at the hospital for blunt trauma injuries to the head, the sheriff's department said, and is now out of the hospital.

Investigators say that it was a combination of witnesses, information from the community, and their follow-up investigation that led to the arrests of the four charged in this crime.

Investigators say that all of the suspects were taken into custody without incident, and the sheriff's department identified the suspects and charges as follows:

Keon Morquel Elkins, 17, of Oak Hollow Road, charged with armed robbery. He was arrested on May 8 and remains in custody on a $30,000.00 bond.

Carlos Lopaz Maybin, 21, of Mt. Bethel Garmany Road, charged with armed robbery. He was arrested on May 12 and has been released on bond.

Horace Rashad Maybin, 18, Oak Hollow Road, charged with armed robbery. He was arrested on May 18 and has been released on bond.

The juvenile was only identified as being 15-years-old, the sheriff's department said.
