Inmate convicted of threatening president

BISHOPVILLE - A prisoner at Lee Correctional Institution has been convicted by a federal grand jury on charges of threatening the president by mail.

According to the U.S. attorney's office, Unula Boo Shawn Abebe, 24, sent two threatening letters, both dated from January -one to the White House, the other to district court in Columbia.

Both letters were mailed from Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, with the prisoner's name and number on the return, officials said.

Abebe, who will be sentenced in January, could receive a fine of $250,000 and five years in prison.
