Rescuers pulled a woman from the icy, rain-swollen Congaree River at the Gervais Street bridge Saturday afternoon after she could not be talked out of keeping her grip on the bridge ledge, officials said.
The woman was helped to shore about 5:40 p.m. by West Columbia police officer Neal Nelson and an out-of-state firefighter near the Blossom Street bridge, said West Columbia Capt. Jackie Brothers and Columbia Assistant Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins.
The woman was in critical condition Saturday at Palmetto Health Richland hospital, Brothers said.
