The Richland County Sheriff's Department will conduct driver safety checkpoints on New Year's Eve.
Sheriff Leon Lott said the safety checkpoints are a response to citizen concerns about drivers' behavior.
Deputies are working to create greater awareness that speeding, driving without seat belts and driving under the influence are illegal and a danger to everyone. The sheriff emphasized the importance of choosing a designated driver. Those motorists who decide to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs will face consequences, police say.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol, Columbia Police Department and Eastover Police Department will assist with the checkpoints, including:

- Tonight on Shop Road, east of Atlas Road
- Thursday on the east and west ramps of I-20 onto Clemson Road and on Bush River Road at I-26.
