Garbage truck slams into house

It may have been the most unusual New Year's greeting in all South Carolina.

A 30-ton garbage truck crashed into a house in the Ballentine area Thursday morning, damaging the structure.

"Thank God no one in the residence was hurt," said Richland County spokesman Stephany Snowden.

The garbage truck, loaded with yard waste, apparently had a gear shift malfunction and began to cruise downhill, knocking down the mailbox at one house and then doing a slow crash into the front of the house at 18 Persimmon Wood Court, Snowden said.

No one was home at the time, she said, nor was anyone in the vehicle, but one garbage truck worker received minor injuries.

The truck is owned by Allwaste Services Inc., one of several haulers that contract with Richland County for trash pickup.

The house's driveway, roof and front porch were damaged, she said. No dollar value estimate of the damage was available.

Such an incident is the responsibility of Allwaste Services, she said, "but the county has an interest in making sure that the homeowners are restored."
