Suspect in stomping death turns self in

Columbia police have one suspect in custody and are seeking others in the weekend stomping death of a 49-year-old Columbia man.

Kenneth Jerome Mack died in the Palmetto Health Richland hospital intensive care unit at 9:30 p.m. Sunday night.

He was injured Saturday when several people beat, kicked and stomped him while he was lying on the ground, a police spokesman said.

The incident took place at Building L, 1505 Garden Plaza, in the Gonzales Gardens housing complex. The apartments are across Forest Drive from Providence Hospital.

Marcellius O'Brian Brooks, 22, turned himself in to Columbia Police Department headquarters Monday evening, according to police. He was being questioned Monday night and will be transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

Police are searching for others suspected of involvement in the attack.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Mack apparently suffered "closed head injuries and blunt force trauma." An autopsy is planned, Watts said.
