An S.C. Highway Patrol trooper has been fired after he was arrested over the weekend on drunk driving charges.
Trooper Joseph Buchwald, 25, was charged with driving under the influence Sunday after he was involved in a 2 a.m. car wreck at Greene and Henderson streets in Five Points, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said. His vehicle was the only one involved in the wreck. Buchwald was off-duty at the time of the accident.
Buchwald was fired by highway patrol commander Col. Kenny Lancaster at 5 a.m. at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, said Sid Gaulden, a highway patrol spokesman.
Buchwald was hired by the highway patrol in January and began patrolling in May after completing trooper school, Gaulden said.
