Two Columbia men have been charged in connection with an armed robbery at a West Columbia store, West Columbia police announced Tuesday.
Craig Patrick Starkey, 25 of Palm Tree Lane and Aaron Maurice Battle, 27, of Cannondale Road face charges of armed robbery, kidnapping, and assault and battery first degree, officials said.
According to police, the GameStop store on Augusta Road was open later than usual for the release of a new video game. Two men — wearing disposable gloves, hooded sweat shirts and shirts pulled over their mouths — entered the store around 12:55 a.m. Monday and told the clerk they were there to rob him. One man forced the clerk to the floor while the other locked the front door. They then pushed the clerk into a back room where they began to bind his hands. At that time, a customer knocked on the door and the robbers ran out a back exit.
Officers in the area were able to track down the suspects near the store shortly after the incident. Both were being held Tuesday afternoon at the Lexington County Detention Center.
