Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott has issued a public warning about scammers who are identifying themselves as investigators from his department during phone calls.
Two county residents have reported receiving calls in which a person says he is a sheriff’s investigator looking into video evidence of the citizen being connected to a crime. The caller has asked for $100 to make the evidence disappear and then asked for the resident’s name and address.
Sheriff’s investigators always identify themselves and typically ask to meet people face to face, Lott said. Anyone who receives a call from someone who claims to be a police investigator should ask for a name and badge number and call the law enforcement agency to verify the information. Lott also asked anyone who suspects they received one of these fraudulent calls to report it to his office.
