A Lexington County couple who were accused of locking their 3-year-oldin a dog pen to play have been released from jail.
Edward George Smith, 34, and Kelly Lynn Smith, 37, each were arrestedThursday on a charge of unlawful conduct toward a child, according to awarrant from the Lexington County Sheriff's Department. Each wasreleased on a $5,000 bond, according to a jail report.
The two were arrested after someone found their son - wearing a dirtydiaper - wandering alone in the middle of Pond Branch Road. Sheriff'sdeputies determined where the child lived and when they knocked on thedoor no one answered. Deputies entered the house and found the Smithsasleep inside.
A 2-year-old child was asleep in a crib saturated with urine and he alsowas wearing a dirty diaper. Deputies reported that the house smelled ofrotting food and spoiled linens. They also said garbage, moldy food anddirty clothes were strewn about the house.
Edward Smith told deputies the couple sometimes locked the 3-year-old ina dog pen to play so they would not have to keep an eye on him. Thechildren were removed from the home, the sheriff's department reported.
