Less than two weeks after being confirmed by the state Senate to head the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, Director Leroy Smith announced changes in the executive staff.
Former State Transport Police Col. Nick Moore has been moved into a chief management role, handling the administrative and support functions of the department.
Leroy Taylor will head the State Transport Police. Taylor is a 26-year veteran of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, another part of the Department of Public Safety. He has seen postings in Sumter, Greenville and Richland counties.
The State Transport Police are responsible for enforcing state and federals laws governing commercial traffic, including enforcing commercial traffic size and weight requirements, removing unsafe drivers and protecting the environment from hazardous materials being transported in and through the state.
