Body recovered from Saluda River after 2-day search

The body of a person who drowned in the Saluda River in Columbia on Friday was recovered Saturday afternoon, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Emergency agencies had been searching the water since Friday afternoon when witnesses said they saw a male go under the surface near the Riverbanks Zoo. The search was called off at dark Friday and resumed Saturday morning.

The body was recovered around 2:15 p.m. Saturday, according to the sheriff’s department.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released.

It is the second river death in Columbia in a week. A 35-year-old man drowned on Sunday while attempting to swim across the Congaree River near downtown with three other people.
