It was a very long day for some Richland 1 elementary school students many of whom didn’t get home from school until nearly 6 p.m.
Caughman Road and Mill Creek elementary schools, as well as Lower Richland High School for a brief period, were locked down while Richland County deputies searched for an attempted murder suspect from Texas.
Officers from multiple agencies searched the area of Garners Ferry Road and Pineview Road for Reginald Campbell, according to Lt. Curtis Wilson of the sheriff’s department. The search includes K-9 teams and helicopters.
Mill Creek Elementary School and Caughman Road Elementary School were on total lockdown while deputies search the area, according to Karen York, a Richland School District 1 spokeswoman.
Students whose parents normally pick them up from school were allowed to leave with their parents, York said. However, students who ride buses home were held at the schools until about 5:50 p.m..
The sheriff’s department said in a tweet that a daycare also was on lockdown.
Campbell is wanted for attempted capital murder in Texas, Wilson said. He is described as a black male about 6 feet tall and 170 pounds. He is wearing black cargo pants and is missing a shoe. The suspect had a white T-shirt on but has removed it, officials said.
Anyone who sees Campbell should not approach him but call 911, Wilson said.
