The Cayce Department of Public Safety has released dashcam footage of a high-speed chase that ended with the suspect crashing his vehicle into a Columbia utility pole.
Michael Bender Kepler, 22, had a blood alcohol concentration three times the legal limit at the time of Wednesday’s pursuit and wreck, according to multiple reports.
The pursuit began after 3 a.m., when a Cayce DPS officer observed a vehicle driving recklessly in the 900 block of Knox Abbott Drive and refusing to stop for police blue lights, wltx.com reported.
Instead, Kepler sped toward the Blossom Street Bridge making a right onto Assembly Street, wach.com reported.
“The suspect initiated a pursuit across Blossom Street and took a right on Assembly Street. The officer backed off due to the suspect’s driving and lost sight,” Cayce DPS spokesperson Ashley Hunter said, according to wistv.com. “The officer came up to the railroad tracks and observed the collision and two power poles cut in half.”
The officer then observed a mangled vehicle lying on its drivers’ side, and Kepler was entrapped, requiring emergency crews to remove him from the vehicle, wach.com reported.
Kepler was taken to an area hospital with what was described as non-life threatening injuries. Charges are pending for driving under the influence and failure to stop for blue lights and sirens.
