Eight teens were arrested and charged this week after a fight at Sumter’s Lakewood High School was captured on video and went viral.
The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrests Thursday, nine days after after the brawl took place in the school parking lot.
A video shared on Facebook by one student’s mother was viewed more than 145,000 times. The video appears to have since been removed from Facebook.
Along with the video, the woman wrote a post saying that her son and two of his friends were jumped at school by seven other boys.
The students charged with disturbing schools are:
Tylin Benenhaley, 17
Johnvanttee Ameen Bender, 17
Tyrek Dequan Brown, 18
Terrence Lee Epps, 19
Jalin Omar Harvin-Thomas, 17
Caleb Garret McCloud, 18
Kristopher Rex Twigg, 17
Alex Daniel Zaragoza, 17
The students are not allowed to return to school property, the sheriff’s office said Thursday.
“The difficulty lies in the fact that usually a video only tells a part of the story,” Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said in a news release. “We viewed several videos to get as complete of story as we could. We also interviewed, not only the participants, but other students who witnessed the event.
“Hopefully, this will not happen again as these students now face charges from law enforcement.”
