A Midlands man was arrested and charged Monday in the death of his 6-year-old son, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Karlton Brabham Sr., 26, was charged with homicide by child abuse, the sheriff’s department reported.
On Feb. 5, Brabham and another family member drove the unresponsive 6-year-old boy to an emergency care clinic, before he was rushed to an area hospital where the boy was declared dead, said Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.
Watts’ office determined that the boy’s death was not accidental, the sheriff’s department said. The child suffered a traumatic brain injury after being assaulted by Brabham at an Elgin residence.
Brabham was arrested by the RCSD Fugitive Task Force and the U.S. Marshals Service.
Brabham was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, where he is awaiting a bond hearing.
