A 14-year-old Irmo Middle student brought an unloaded gun and marijuana in his backpack to school Tuesday, police said.
The boy was charged with having a weapon and drugs on a school campus, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
School administrators became aware Tuesday morning that a student might have a gun, police said, and the boy fled campus and ran into the woods after being confronted by an assistant principal.
An airsoft gun and a small amount of marijuana were found in the student’s backpack by a school resource officer after the boy was detained, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
The boy was released to the care of his mother and will appear in Lexington County Family Court at a later date.
